![]() ![]() Lewis follows the same path he treads in his earlier work (especially my favourite Moneyball, about the world of baseball) and focuses on the people who knew better than the accepted yet faulty wisdom. Unsurprisingly, those who were instrumental in causing the problems are pretty tight-lipped about their involvement. In fact, given the extent of the current global clusterfuck, it makes the shocking Liar's Poker look positively mild by comparison. Just as his earlier excellent work Liar's Poker encapsulated the excesses of Wall Street in the 1980s, so does The Big Short perfectly tell the tale of Wall Street in the 2000s. ![]() How did it all come about and how did it play out? Michael Lewis explains the mess as only he can. Strip away all the intentionally confusing terminology and it all amounts to bets with unbelievable amounts of money. And the people who caused it all got rich during and after, very few felt any sort of consequences, and millions of other people worldwide suffered greatly. Unregulated greed, that went on and on and on. The subprime mortgage crisis, the worldwide financial crisis, people losing their jobs, their money, their houses, their security. I'm surprised it's not an angrier book, but Michael Lewis' writing is as great as ever. ![]() Summary: An excellent and important look at the subprime mortgage crisis, how it was caused, and those who truly saw the problems before everyone else. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hostage Taker tells a tense story about a crisis that strikes an iconic cathedral in the middle of the holiday season, terrifying tourists and bringing the bustling city streets to a standstill as Eve and her unlikely teammates race against the clock to stop the hostage taker before he claims another victim.īut after the situation is introduced-and before the tension really gets a chance to build-Pintoff turns her back on the hostages being held inside the cathedral and takes the time to introduce each member of the team. So, with a deadline looming, she calls in her top-secret team of ex-cons to help her search for answers and stop a man who seems determined to make his targets pay for their sins. ![]() As the crisis shuts down one of the busiest parts of the city, Eve is under pressure to handle the situation, rescue the hostages, and save a national landmark in the process. The hostage taker demands to speak with Eve Rossi of the FBI, asking her to gather five witnesses who share an unknown connection. The story begins early one winter morning, as a hostage situation unfolds at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. ![]() And that’s what a street-smart team of crime-fighting criminals brings to author Stefanie Pintoff’s Hostage Taker. Sometimes, you need something more-a different kind of experience. ![]() Anyone who’s spent a brainless Friday night watching crime shows on TV can tell you that, sometimes, the best training won’t help you solve a crime. ![]() ![]() ![]() On the science fiction side, some readers are deeply skeptical of anything labeled romance, sometimes without ever having read a romance. Whenever that happens, it becomes tricky to please everyone-hence the balancing act. Science fiction romance merges two genres with very loyal, very vocal fanbases, each with their own expectations and biases. Science fiction romance is something of a balancing act, and I deeply appreciate all of the writers, especially the women, who came before, forged a trail, and made the road far easier for me to follow. When I started writing the book, I knew it might struggle to find the right audience, the right niche. The relationship is at the core of the story, but there are also spaceships, battles, politics, rescues, and friendships-all of the things you’d expect from space opera. ![]() Shenanigans ensue and they fall desperately in lust, then in love. ![]() My heroine is a kick-ass space princess who becomes reluctant allies with an outlaw soldier. ![]() Polaris Rising, my debut novel, is a space opera and a science fiction romance. Thank you so much for having me as a guest! Today, I want to talk a little bit about my experience writing science fiction romance, how I try to meet the expectations of both genres, and why you should give cross-genre books a try.
